Elder Sam Townsend, Jr. is probably best known as “that choir director” whose distinctive and dramatic style captivates audiences, compels singers, and ushers in the Glory of God. But he is multi-talented and not only a celebrated and widely recognized Choir Master, but an anointed leader, pioneer, trendsetter, ground breaker, prequel and innovator. Aristotle said it best, “We are what we repeatedly do. Therefore, Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” This quote best describes Elder Townsend, who exudes excellence in all of his endeavors. Having faithfully served in terms for over 25 years as the Executive Administrator, Associate Minister, Youth Pastor, and Minister of Minister of Music, at the Greater Glory Ministries Church of God in Christ in Seattle Washington under the pastorate of his father, Sr. Administrative Assistant Superintendent Sam Townsend, Sr., and for over 5 years as the Worship Leader and Executive Director of the Music and Worship Arts Department of the New Beginnings Christian Fellowship, he has developed a style and approach to sacrificial ministry that has earned him great respect and admiration from coast to coast.
Elder Townsend accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age and spent his formative years, despite many obstacles, and his adulthood dedicated to pursuing God’s plan for his life. He was licensed as a Minister by his father, SAA Sam L. Townsend, Sr aver 20 years ago and was ordained as an Elder in the International Church of God in Christ by the Prelate of the Washington State Jurisdiction and Regional Bishop, Bishop Leo C. Brown, Jr. in 2016. A father, author, worship leader, bible teacher, preacher, and award winning director, he is also the CEO of two entities which enable him to mentor, train, and empower the current and next generation in the ministry of music. The Imani Fellowship Choir, founded in 1996, serves as an evangelistic word and music ministry which has produced some of the greatest singers, song writers, choir directors, recording artists, and preachers. Whether in concert or revival, through his uniquely transparent and relevant delivery of the Gospel, countless souls have been impacted, healed, delivered, and set free. The Townsend School of Music & Arts, founded in 2013, provides the foundation for all of his workshops, seminars, and music ministry support services designed to address the varied needs of up and coming singers, worship leaders, pastors and churches. His next greatly anticipated endeavor is the publication of a collection of humors and spiritually infused personal life lessons in his first book, Funny Faith, which has been released and is now available.
He has traveled extensively throughout Canada, Europe, Africa, and the United States carrying the Gospel, facilitating workshops, performing in concerts, served as Master of Ceremonies, and acting in major stage plays. He has served as a District and State Minister of Music for the Washington State Jurisdiction COGIC, and currently serves the International COGIC Music Department as the Regional President over the Northwest Region (Alaska, Washington State, Oregon, Idaho, Northern Nevada, and Northern California), serves as an Instructor for the Applied Studies Institute, is one of the lead directors of the International Mass Choir under the leadership of the International COGIC Minister of Music, Dr. Judith Christie McAllister who also has appointed him as the International Assistant Coordinator of Quorum of Directors
Today, after 30 years of ministry, Elder Sam Townsend, Jr. stands as a challenger, a changer, and a champion with an uncompromising commitment to Christ, the Call, and the Kingdom. His ministry transcends race, gender, age, and denomination, and he is devoted to leading others into a genuine relationship with Christ.
